{"id":51,"date":"2026-09-06T08:15:25","date_gmt":"2026-09-06T08:15:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wow-nl.dev\/index.php\/about-wow-nl\/"},"modified":"2026-09-06T08:40:25","modified_gmt":"2026-09-06T08:40:25","slug":"about-wow-nl","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wow-nl.meteo.be\/en\/about-wow-nl\/","title":{"rendered":"About WOW-NL"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">KNMI and RMI join forces<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the UK Met Office announced in 2025 that it would stop managing the international WOW platform (Weather Observations Website), a unique network of citizen observations was at risk of disappearing. The Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium (RMI) stepped in and arranged a <strong>relaunch<\/strong>: the platform was relaunched as <strong>WOW-BE<\/strong>, fully managed and hosted by RMI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (<strong>KNMI<\/strong>) joined this initiative and now also offers the platform to Dutch weather observers under the name <strong>WOW-NL<\/strong>. Both institutes work together to provide a stable, open and non-commercial platform for citizen scientists in the Netherlands and Belgium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Improvements over the old WOW<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Station registration available in Dutch, French and English<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Solar radiation added as a weather variable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clear distinction between relative and absolute air pressure measurements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open data and open software platform<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Open data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The data contributed by the community remains <strong>available to the community<\/strong>. KNMI and RMI consider it important to make this data accessible through an open data platform. Preparations are well underway, with the aim of launching this initiative during <strong>2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Open source<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not only the measurement data, but also the <strong>software behind the platform<\/strong> is freely available. This allows anyone to <strong>check<\/strong> how the information is processed, and lets the community help to further <strong>improve<\/strong> and <strong>renew<\/strong> the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the previous version, the underlying system was managed for many years by the UK Met Office.
